So today is the release of Rin Chupeco's terrifyingly beautiful novel, The Girl from the Well. I am more than half-way through and I cannot decide whether I want it to end so that I'll know what happens or if I want to make the book last and savor every beautifully frightening page. It is so good. For any horror buffs out there - especially Japanese themed ones - then this is the book for you! And can I just say? The way Rin Chupeco writes is absolutely magical, very poetic.

You may think me biased, being murdered myself. But my state of being has nothing to do with the curiosity toward my own species, if we can be called such. We do not go gentle, as your poet encourages, into that good night. A dead girl walks the streets. She hunts murderers. Child killers, much like the man who threw her body down a well three hundred years ago. And when a strange boy bearing stranger tattoos moves into the neighborhood so, she discovers, does something else. And soon both will be drawn into the world of eerie doll rituals and dark Shinto exorcisms that will take them from American suburbia to the remote valleys and shrines of Aomori, Japan. Because the boy has a terrifying secret - one that would justkillto get out. The Girl from the Wellis A YA Horror novel pitched as "Dexter" meets "The Grudge", based on a well-loved Japanese ghost story.
Despite an unsettling resemblance to Japanese revenants, Rin always maintains her sense of hummus. Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, she keeps four pets: a dog, two birds, and a husband. Dances like the neighbors are watching.

When Drake started the night at his father’s campaign fundraiser, he never imagined he’d end it being conned into buying drugs on the West Side. Losing high-stakes poker has its consequences, but he’d repeatedly face them just to hear Lacey Douglas sing. Drake sees Lacey light up the stage, and he has to have her. But his intentions for being on her side of town turn out to be the reason he can’t. Chicago native Lacey has dreams of the opera, but life has its obstacles. Lacey has come to know her hardships as part of living in the real world and accepts them fully. When Lacey meets the intense and invigorating Drake, a fire is lit inside her, unleashing those dreams again. Two paths that should have never crossed prove to create the exact pairing the other needs. But when their worlds take time to catch up, everything they have is tested. Finding the space between the two sides that challenge them will be hard, but it’s the only place that will keep them together. The Space Between is a new adult contemporary romance.
While I was reading this book, I actually found myself wondering what the title meant. The Space Between gave off such a Paranormal vibe that I thought it would be, but I was wrong. It's really just a sweet but melancholic novel filled with such powerful characters. I really enjoyed this The Space Between.
I found myself getting turned off during the first few pages of this book because Drake was kind of a douche but as it went on, The Space Between started to grow on me. As I read on, I realized how interesting its characters really were.
Even though Drake seemed kind of obnoxious during the first few pages, he's actually a really caring person. There may be parts that he will seem a bit douche-y but he'll really grow on you. Drake is actually the adopted son of Senator Drake (they both have the same name,) and he's always had a strained relationship with him and it's because of this that Drake has a rebellious streak. But I guess his mother makes up for it? His family is kind of messed up and the only other normal and likable person is his sister, Adele. While he may have a weird, stand-offish relationship with his dad, Adele has the opposite. Their father has always favored her most likely because she's his real child and Senator Drake is a bit of a racist (Drake's of Asian descent but so, so yummy.) I'm actually amazed that Drake grew up to be a pretty outstanding young man who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in. And he certainly didn't back down when his love was threatened but when it was tested, I can't say so much...
I really liked Lacey. Not only does she have an amazing voice but she's such a strong girl. She doesn't ask for help unless she needs it because she's so independent. And the fact that she's the only person taking care of her mama who has cancer is so inspiring. Her love for her mother is what drove her to look for a job and give-up her dreams. The things she was willing to sacrifice for love was so heart-wrenching.
The Space Between isn't just your average Contemporary novel. It's more than sweet, stolen moments. It's a book that shows us that even if you're part of two different worlds, that shouldn't stop you from falling in love. Drake and Lacey's relationship certainly wasn't an easy one but they managed to make it work because of their trust for each other. Even though there were meddling parents trying to prevent them from being together, they still overcame that in the end. I adored this book and I can't wait to read more!

London and her teenage friends live in a reprocessed world.
Confined within Capital City’s concrete walls, London has done the impossible and the illegal. She’s created something New- a song. But her mentor, club owner Pauly, is not impressed. Since the historic Energy Crisis forced everyone behind walls generations ago, the Tycoons have ensured there is truly nothing new allowed under the sun. Pauly warns London to keep her song to herself, if she knows what’s good for her.
What he doesn’t know, is that London is keeping an even bigger secret she dreams. And she’s not alone. London’s band-mates and friends have begun dreaming as well, seeing themselves in “night pictures” as beings from another world. As Otherborn, they must piece together the story of their astral avatars, the Others, in order to save their world from a dreamless, hopeless future.
When Pauly is murdered and an Otherborn goes missing, London realizes someone is hunting them down. Escaping along the Outroads, they brave the deserted Houselands with only their dreams to guide them. Can they find their friend before the assassin finds them? Will being Otherborn save their lives, or destroy them?
Otherborn is probably one of the most imaginative and well-thought out books I have ever read. This book isn't just Dystopian, it's a beautiful mix of Fantasy and a harsh but possible future.
I actually couldn't get into the story at first because I was kinda confused but as it went on, I saw and understand the world Anna Silver created. Like most Dystopian novels, there was a division between the people. As caste system, if you will. And people judged you from the jobs you get in the future. It's an unfair society but also familiar to us, it's how we act now. Anna Silver was able to capture the hardships and success people go through now into a new world. A world where everything is "old", where people are close-minded and tend to disregard any kind of creativity.
This is where London and her gang of misfits come in. The thing with London and her friends, Otherborn is what they call themselves, is that they dream and they create. They have ideas that most people in their society wouldn't even dream of having (well, it's also mostly because they can't dream. Croo.) But the thing is, these "new" ideas they have are being repressed due to the fact that their acting goverment dislikes any sort of evolvement from the people, especially ones from the lower caste (except for Avery who's from a higher caste.) And now, important people in London's life are being killed because of this progression and now, all London and her friends can do is leave their city and look for answers.
The idea of the Otherborn is so unique and interesting that I couldn't help but fall in love with it. They are basically dream versions of our characters but slightly cooler and they look different. They have an agenda of their own and there is a reason is to why they are actually there. While it may seem a little cliched, these unlikely heroes are there to save the world. They're trying to reshape the dullness and dreamlessness of their city and mold it into something good and positive. Innovation isn't suppose to be just for the rich, it's meant for everybody and while spreading these good intentions might seem pretty hard, I don't doubt our heroes' capabilities.
I felt for London. Yup, I felt a lot of things for her. Most of them was pride and a bit of it was pity. She has gone through a lot of shit but she certainly never gave up. Even when people tried to knock her down a peg or three, she would simple brush it off and jump even higher. She knew what her purpose was and even though she wasn't sure what she was heading into, she still believed in her instincts (even though they might not always be right.) She acts as a leader for her friends and they are cool with that because in the end, she was the one who brought them together. She "infected" them with her dreams and they welcomed it. London is just a girl who's trying to find her place in the world and even if her place is in a dream world, then so be it.
Reading Otherborn was such a wonderful experience. I honestly didn't think that I would enjoy it as much as I did, but I did. Otherborn is filled with such a unique richness that other authors just haven't tapped into yet. The fact that Anna Silver took that risk and ventured into a world most people would be reluctant to go to just made me appreciate this novel even more. It's not just the crumbling society that drew me in or her memorable characters but it's also the way she carefully details everything. You are going to be slowly guided into her world and in the end, you won't want to leave. I actually found my heart tightening at a scene in the book that I can't elaborate on because it's a spoiler but... ouch. You will really just find yourself immersed in Otherborn's world that you can't help but just feel everything, and that's always a sign for a great book. So if you want a book that is like no other then trust me, Otherborn is for you.

No one is like Daemon Black. When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on. But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love. After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever. Together we’re stronger... and they know it.
